Frequently asked questions
Does my coach need to be certified?
No. Parenting coaching is not a regulated profession in most countries. However, certification is a meaningful trust signal — it confirms your coach invested in formal training rather than simply calling themselves an expert.
What’s the difference between a coaching certification and a therapy license?
Therapy licenses (LMFT, LCSW, LPC) are government-regulated and allow diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. Coaching certifications focus on goal-setting, accountability, and skill-building. Many coaches hold both.
How can I verify my coach’s credentials?
Ask your coach which credential they hold, then check if the issuing organization has a public directory. Some organizations (like PCI, ICF, and Positive Discipline) offer searchable directories, but many do not. On The Parenting Passport, we link to the org’s directory when one is available.
Are credentials on The Parenting Passport verified?
Credentials are self-reported by coaches. We do not independently verify them. We provide transparency by explaining what each credential means and linking to verification directories so you can check for yourself.
Which parenting coaching certification is the best?
There is no single “best” certification. PCI is the most comprehensive and most-cited. Jai Institute has the largest graduate network. Positive Discipline is the most accessible. ICF carries the broadest recognition. The right one depends on the coach’s background and approach.
